royal holiday
Here's a card trick that works. It just works. No slight of hand required.

set up:
Pull out all the Kings, Queens, Jacks and Aces.
Place the rest of the deck face down.

(1) lay down the kings as shown
As you do this say something like, "Once upon a time four royal families went on vacation. The kings arrived first at the hotel."

(2) then the queens
continue your story, "Next their wives checked in."

(3) then the jacks
"Their sons arrived late, showing up in their sports cars ..."

(4) finally the aces
"... and they each brought along their family dog."

(5) split the deck 3 times
Stack all the royal families together facing down. Ignore the "hotel" in the middle. Ask your audience to split the royal deck 3 times, each time placing the bottom half over the top half.

As you do continue the plot, "That night they all went out drinking. Even the dogs had a few too many."

(6) lay the cards down in a circle
Go around the "hotel" in a circle laying one face down card at each corner until they're all down.

"They all got back and were so plastered they barely made it into bed."

(7) a new day dawns
Flip the royal stacks over, "When they woke up the next morning with massive hangovers they realized something else wasn't quite right."
